MORIA’S SCAR

The Definitive Agbekoya Narrative

Meet the Author: Bimbo Bakare

Oluwaseun “Bimbo” Bakare is a passionate storyteller, world traveler, and keen observer of the human experience. Born and raised in Nigeria, his innate curiosity and “wanderlust spirit” were sharpened by extensive international experience with one of the world’s topmost global companies, leading him to consider himself a citizen of the world.

The Wanderlust Spirit

Inspired by the legacy of 14th-century Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta, Bimbo documents his journeys to provide valuable cultural insights. He is the author of the upcoming two-part travelogue series, Crossing Borders and Adventure Beckons: Australia from an African’s Eyes, chronicling his personal journey through the Australian outback and North-West region.

A Legacy of Resilience & Recognition

Bimbo’s writing is driven by a deep appreciation for diversity, showing that while we are all different, at our core, we are still the same.

A 2025 recipient of the Caruso Writers-in-Residence Award, he spent two weeks at the Katherine Susan Pritchard Writers’ Centre finalizing the manuscript for Moria’s Scar.

A Note on Literary License

While Moria’s Scar is deeply rooted in the soil of the 1968–1969 Agbekoya Uprising, it is first and foremost a work of historical fiction. I have chosen to embrace the full breadth of literary licensure to weave a narrative that prioritises emotional truth and the pursuit of an engaging story over a strictly factual reconstruction of events. Readers should understand that the dialogue, certain character arcs, and specific plot developments are creative imaginings designed to entertain and provoke thought, rather than to serve as an assertive historical record. My goal is to illuminate the spirit of that era through the lens of Moria’s journey, rather than to claim absolute historical correctness for every detail contained within these pages.

The Author’s Address – Lagos

…. a young lady in her early twenties tied her infant son to her back and made the long journey from Ekiti to Ibadan. Her purpose was simple: to introduce her newborn to his grandfather. She arrived at Elekuro minutes after the Agbekoya protesters had left. Her knocks on the door went unanswered; the household was huddled in silence, fearing the protesters had returned to terrorize them..

The Author (Bimbo’s) Speech – Perth

I felt a deep compulsion to write this because, frankly, the landmarks that should memorialize our past and educate our future simply aren’t there. When I travel through these areas today, there are no monuments, no memorials—nothing to help the next generation understand what happened or why things are the way they are.

Lagos Book Reviewer (Ezinne) Insights

From the very first page, Bakare opens a door into Ibadan of the late 1960s—a city alive with sound and scent, where the “Alfa” call to prayer slices through the dawn, where markets hum beneath rust-red roofs, and where Mapo Hall stands like a colonial giant overseeing the teeming city below.

Perth (Pamela Watson) Review

This is an intelligent and ambitious novel. Its greatest strength lies in its refusal to simplify. It resists the easy narrative of blame and instead presents a world of overlapping pressures and imperfect actors, many of whom exhibit both good and bad traits and actions.
