In Ode-Ekiti, my mother unknowingly violated a deeply rooted local custom when she casually gave away our family's roadkill dog to a neighbor. Unbeknownst to her, traditional law declared any animal dying in front of a compound as "divine provision" for that household, making her generous gesture a major public insult. Before the day ended, my father was summoned to the Palace, where the King and his council ordered an apology and two live goats as compensation. As the old Waffi proverb goes, *"Monkey no wise, na tree near tree"*—a funny, enduring reminder of the steep cost of cultural ignorance.
